How do I choose which monitor to buy?
These will depend on what your usage is, typically this will be basic computing, all-round computing, multi-media/professional or gaming. Here is a quick summary of what is best for each usage type:
Basic Computing - If you need a monitor for emails, surfing, looking at social media sites, paying bills or doing online banking you do not need the latest and greatest or a monitor with special features. Typically a 19" to 24" LCD monitor will be enough with a resolution of 1680x1050 or 1920x1080. This type of monitor offers the best value for money. A standard TN panel will be fine.
All-round monitor - For tasks mentioned above in addition to spreadsheet, watching YouTube, streaming TV shows/movies or having an online meeting consider a monitor 22" and greater in size. A full HD (1920x1080) resolution would be best and IPS technology if your budget stretches that far.
Multimedia/Professional - If you are a graphic designer, photographer, or video editor you will need a much higher specification monitor. Two key aspects are 1. the size of the screen and 2. the screen resolution. Typically a screen which is a least 24" or greater with QHD resolution, IPS panes with a low response rate (5ms or less). Also look for monitors with adjustable stands and consider a dual monitor setup to improve work efficiency.
Gaming monitor - This is all about the response and refresh rate to ensure your game runs smoothly. A maximum of 5ms response rate is recommended and a screen size of at least 24" and full HD resolution so you can enjoy the gaming experience. Alienware is a respected and quality brand for gaming monitors.
